We’re back with another week of Design Insider Tips! Today, we’re diving into lighting – one of my absolute favourite topics in interior design and space planning.
Many people see lighting as purely functional, but it’s so much more than that. While its primary role is to illuminate a space, I wish more people realized that lighting can also be a form of art – a creative way to add personality, depth, and a sense of warmth to your home.
3 TIPS WHEN CHOOSING LIGHTING:
1. Ambient (General) – The foundation of your lighting scheme. It provides overall illumination, ensuring your space feels open and inviting. Examples include recessed lights, chandeliers, and flush mounts.
2. Task – Designed for functionality, task lighting directs focus where you need it most. Think pendant lights over a kitchen island, sconces beside a bathroom mirror, or a cozy reading lamp by your bed.
3. Accent – The finishing touch! Accent lighting draws attention to architectural details or decor, like LED strips under cabinets, picture lights above artwork, or uplighting for dramatic effect.
Pro Tip: Want an instant refresh? Swap outdated fixtures for modern statement pieces or add dimmer switches for customizable ambiance throughout the day. Small changes, big impact!
